Fabric Wrapped Soil Lifts

Installation Procedure

  1. Before installing fabric wrapped soil layers clean and level the base of the eroded streambank. If necessary, strengthen the toe with coir log and the foundation using rocks as show in the diagram (Fig. 1). Place at least 2 inches of soil on the top and level the surface well.
  2. If the water table is below the soil surface, place suitable, native wood plant cuttings horizontally on the prepared surface. If the soil surface is at the water level, do not plant at this time. Most of the woody plants including willows will not grow in submerged conditions.
  3. Start installing the first soil layer (lift) on the prepared foundation. Place the selected fabrics (bottom of the lift) on the foundation and anchor it good to the ground with suitable anchors. Fill dirt on the bottom fabric while holding the other end of the blankets upwards. Typical height of the layer with fabric alone is about 9 to 12 inches. Compact the filled soil well and cover with the rest of the blanket anchor it well with suitable anchors. Spread a 2 - 3 inch thick soil layer on the fabric. Place suitable types of native plant cuttings in that soil layer (Fig. 2).
  4. Repeat the lift construction procedure described above to make layers as needed procedure described in step 4, layering to the top of the bank. On the very top layer, spread grass seeds. You may also want to stake down woody plant cuttings. Plant native bog plants along the toe (coir roll or bottom fabric encapsulated soil / rock layer).
  5. When fabric joining is needed, overlap minimum 12 inches and use additional anchors in the overlap.
  6. We recommend using minimum 1 in x 1.5 in x 15 in pine wedges at every 3 ft to anchor the bottom fabric to the ground before filling with soil and 2 in x 2 in x 24 in pine wedges on the top fabric after filling with soil. These wedges may be substituted with 12 in or longer metal staples if necessary. Additional anchors will increase the safety factor of the constructed slope.
  7. We recommend using two fabrics for construction of soil lifts. An inner fabric is required to hold fine soil particles in place and strong, durable outer fabric to provide strength to the constructed soil lift. We recommend using BioD-Mat 70 or BioD-Mat 90 high strength brown bristle coir woven blankets for outer fabric and BioD-OCF or BioD-StrawCoco stitched natural blankets for inner fabric.
  8. We recommend that you consider individual site conditions, select suitable plant/tree types and address special conditions if they exist. This procedure could be altered at the discretion of the design engineer/architect.

In extreme weather conditions, inner fabric can biodegrade faster and possible to fail as soil particles come out through the outer fabric. Possible failures associated with soil layering with fabrics can be overcome using BioD-Block coir block system. Cost of installation can also be reduced using coir block system.
